Did that and upon the return of the original Joomla 4 .htaccess I think I have noticed a difference in the admin panel "notifications" lighting up with "4.4.0 Available - Update Now!" and the extensions panel beside it indicating eight updates available.
(I had also uninstalled the Admin Tools extension set as I wasn't about to be using it again.)
Might do a backup and then try the Joomla upgrade to 4.4.0 and see how it goes. This is most encouraging as the availability of an update was something this Joomla install was blind to.
